Lights, Water, Action!

Lights! Camera! Action! - That's past.

Now, it's Lights! Water! Action!... It's amazing and interesting how MBS uses lights and water to create this spectacular show. Happened to catch their technical rehearsal (I supposed so as I was watching this at 11++pm). Can't post it on this blog as they have a limit of 100MB a file =( Will link it to my fb after it's uploaded.

Meanwhile, you can read more about MBS Light and Water Spectacular at http://www.marinabaysands.com/Wonderfull/

Enjoy the pics =). Should have brought my DSLR out.....

Going Bananas

I came back from a run today and while unpacking my goodie bag, which contained an isotonic drink, mineral water, apples and bananas, my parents warned me not to keep the bananas in the fridge. I could leave the apples and the drinks in the fridge but not the bananas, which made me wonder why....

Here's some explanations from my parents and relatives:
1. Bananas in the fridge will rot faster.
2. Bananas in the fridge will produce higher sugar content and thus cause diabetics.
3. Don't know, nobody leave bananas in the fridge, so don't do it!!!

Still wondering why.... any thoughts?

Here's a photo-journey of my 5km NTUC U Run 2011 =)

IT Tools Intro 4 - Generating Ideas and Games

Here's a few more of my favourite IT Tools. These tools are good for generating ideas, like mindmaps, commenting on each other posts and collaboration. There's a tool which I'd like to introduce, it's a simple tool use to generate interesing games for teaching and revision.

1. Webspiration: http://www.mywebspiration.com/ - An online tool for mindmapping. The mindmap can be saved for collaboration. You can allow other users to comment and add-on to the mindmap.

2. Linoit: http://en.linoit.com/ - It's an online stickies. Pictures and videos can be added on as well and many can comment on it as long as they have access to the link. Here's an example of a science class sharing and discussion on 'Salt'.

http://linoit.com/users/W_Liang/canvases/Science%20Experiment%20-%20Salt%20

3. ClassTools: http://classtools.org/ - A simple online tool for generating games. Fun and cool to use. It has other functions like countdown timer. Very interesting to use with students in class. Highly recommended.

IT Tools Intro 3 - Presentation Tools

Here's 2 Presentations Tools which I'd like to recommend:

1. Prezi: http://prezi.com/ - An interesting way to carry out presentation that is not static. You can also zoom in to the ideas that you want to share on.

2. Wordle: http://www.wordle.net/ - This is one of my favourite. You can represent data collected in the form of a beautiful word cloud. The larger the word represent the higher repetition/percentatge of data. Here's an example of the word cloud I created using the words from the article 'A DNA Polymorphism Discovery Resource for Research on Human Genetic Variation' by Francis S. Collins, Lisa D. Brooks, and Aravinda Chakravarti, article retrived from http://genome.cshlp.org/content/8/12/1229.full

A larger version of this word cloud can be seen from the link here; http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/3210570/DNA

IT Tools Intro 2 - Reading and Highlighting

Here's 2 IT Tools which I'd like to share for reading and highlighting of documents:

1. Readabilityhttps://www.readability.com/ - this tool blows up the text for easier reading.

2. Diigolet/Diigohttp://www.diigo.com/tools/diigolet - this tool allows you to highlight, comment and save the text for future reference or collaboration of ideas, especially good when researching and working on a project in groups.

IT Tools Intro 1 - URL Shortener, Maps and File Transfer

Here's some useful IT tools to share:

1. Google Maphttp://maps.google.com.sg/
A map which you can customise and give necessary directions and instructions.

2. URL Shortenerhttp://tinyurl.com/
Ever been irritated by long and complicated URLs which are difficult to remember. Here's the solution. Using tinyurl.com, you can customise long URLs into something easy to remember.

Eg. I've created the direction to the Korean Restaurant using Google Map and would like to share with my friends, I can use tinyurl to shorten the map link from http://maps.google.com.sg/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=
217176078363937506737.

3. Large File Transfer
Here's 2 online sites which I'd like to recommend for huge file transfer.
    (a) WeTransfer: https://www.wetransfer.com/ - To transfer files up to 2GB
    (b) YouSendIt: https://www.yousendit.com/ - To transfer files up to 100MB
